Reinvent yourself: Weight management, Wellness Services expand to beautiful new space
The Henry Ford Macomb Wellness Retreat Center at the Shelby Macomb Medical Mall includes a new studio perfect for yoga and exercise classes.
Whether you want to lose weight, reduce stress, relieve pain, experience natural childbirth or maintain your good health, the newly opened Center for Weight Management and Wellspring Retreat Center can serve as your new beginning and provide help and support along the way.
Located in Suite 20 of the Shelby Macomb Medical Mall on Schoenherr Road just south of 23 Mile, Henry Ford Macomb Hospitals is bringing two different types of services under one roof.
The Wellness Retreat Center offers individual classes and half-day to daylong retreats to experience and learn complementary therapies including Reiki, yoga, Tai Chi, Chi Kung, massage, Thai massage, acupuncture and more. The facility's gleaming wood floors, mirrored walls, sparkling new furnishings and state-of-the-art AV systems provide the ideal environment to take wellness to a new level.
The Center for Weight Management offers personalized, medically supervised weight loss programs for people seeking to lose 30 pounds, 100 pounds or anything in between. A special yoga class is also geared for individuals who want to lose weight.
Give stress the slip Exercises like yoga, Tai Chi and Chi Kung combine breathing, muscle relaxation and meditation. Studies show these activities relieve many stress-related conditions, including anxiety, headaches, high blood pressure, and asthma, as well as improving mood and concentration.
"Treatments like yoga and massage can be utilized for a variety of conditions," says Geoffrey Seidel, MD, Henry Ford Macomb physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist. "For muscular tension pain in the neck or lower back, massage is wonderful for relaxing those muscles and reducing pain. Yoga is good not only for building flexibility and strength, it is also helpful from an emotional perspective. People with chronic pain also have anxiety/depression and often do very well with yoga."
Control pain Henry Ford Macomb rheumatologist Samir Yahia, MD, specializes in treating patients with chronic pain.
"Alternative medicine, including treatments such as Reiki and acupuncture, has a role," he explains. "Do we know exactly how they work? No, but there is the effect of these modalities on the balance of the immune system. The processes that cause chronic pain may be influenced by the immune system, and Reiki seems to have an effect. The same applies to acupuncture. There is no question acupuncture has an effect on chronic pain, even though it may be temporary. While not a substitute for traditional medicine, these modalities are good choices for patients who want to look beyond traditional approaches."
Baby yourself and your baby "For women who are interested in childbirth without pain medication, we offer HypnoBirthing® classes," says Wellspring Services Manager Debbie Burns. "These classes teach hypnosis techniques throughout pregnancy and delivery to release your own natural endorphins, so you don't have to use medications during delivery. Early in the second trimester is an ideal time to begin." Prenatal massage will be offered at the Wellspring Retreat Center.
